Time running out to claim €2,100 Solar Panels grant
For homeowners considering getting solar panels installed on their house, there is little time left to get the most from the SEAI solar PV grant.
The SEAI offers grants to any homeowner who wants to get solar panels installed, as long as their house was built and occupied before 2021.
The SEAI solar PV grant pays €800 per kWp up to 2kWp in system size, and then a further €250 per additional kWp up to the maximum grant of €2,100 at 4kWp.
The maximum grant is currently €2,100 per property, but effective from January 1 this will be cut to €1,800. The reduction will be reflected in the grant value available for solar PV systems of all sizes.
Number of Solar Panels | Solar Panel System Output | Solar Panel Grant Value |
4 panels | 1.74kWp | €1,392 |
6 panels | 2.61kWp | €1,753 |
8 panels | 3.48kWp | €1,970 |
10 panels | 4.35kWp | €2,100 |
12 panels | 5.22kWp | €2,100 |
16 panels | 6.96kWp | €2,100 |
Why apply for the grant now?
The good news is that if you apply for the grant before the end of 2024 you can still qualify for the full figure of €2,100, and there is no great pressure to have the work carried out immediately in the new year.
Once you have received grant approval from the SEAI you have 8 months from that date to have solar panels installed and submit the paperwork before the grant approval expires.
This means that even if you are only considering getting solar panels in 2025, it is worth applying for the grant now and there will still be plenty of time to see the project through.
The government has said that the grant will be reduced each year due to the declining costs of solar panels and their associated equipment as the sector expands.
Are solar panels worth getting?
Solar PV panels are an incredibly lucrative investment for any home, with a good sized system able to produce anywhere from 50% to 75% of your daily electricity consumption.
With prices falling dramatically solar panels can pay for themselves in as little as six years, and will go on producing free electricity for more than two decades after this time.
Getting solar panels on your home is one of the easiest ways to save money on your energy bills, while also increasing the value of the property.
The average cost of a Solar PV system for your home will be between €5,000 and €10,000 after the grant depending on how many solar panels are being installed, and the difficulty of the installation.
