How is the SEAI Grant for Solar Panels Calculated
The size of the grant paid by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is based on the kilowatt peak (kWp) energy output of the solar array being installed on a property.
The kWp value of a solar PV system is the combined total of the power rating of the modules in the system, e.g 10 panels each 440W in strength is a 4.4kWp system size.
The domestic Solar PV Grant is valued at:
- €700 per kWp up to 2kWp
- €200 per kWp up to 4kWp
This brings the maximum grant to €1,800 for a home in Ireland in 2025.
Number of Solar Panels | Solar PV System Output | Grant Value |
4 panels | 1.74kWp | €1,218 |
6 panels | 2.61kWp | €1,522 |
8 panels | 3.48kWp | €1,698 |
10 panels | 4.35kWp | €1,800 |
12 panels | 5.22kWp | €1,800 |
16 panels | 6.96kWp | €1,800 |
The grant applies to the cost of all components and the installation of the solar PV system, such as the solar panels and the inverter. There is no separate or increased grant funding for other solar products such as a power diverter or battery storage.
Who is eligible for solar panel grants?
The SEAI solar PV grant is available to all homeowners, whether owner occupiers of landlords, as long as the property was built and occupied before 2021.
To get more specific the applicant and the property must meet the following criteria.
How much does it cost to have solar panels installed in Ireland?
The average cost of installing solar panels in Ireland will fall somewhere between €5,500 and €10,500 for the majority of homes, before getting the SEAI grant.
With the SEAI grant, this price tag can fall to roughly between €4,250 and €8,700.
The exact price will depend on the number of solar panels being installed, and can vary between different installers.
Other elements, such as whether or not to include a solar battery, can also affect the price of solar PV installations.

Break Even in 6 Years
A typical solar installation is fully paid back within 5 – 7 years. All solar panels we recommend are under warranty for 25 years, so you will enjoy at least 18 years of free energy generation.
