Electric car sales saw strong growth in Ireland in 2025, with a 35% growth in the registration of new EVs compared to the previous year.

Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry show that there were 23,601 new electric cars registered in 2025, an increase of 35.1% from the 17,460 registrations seen in 2024.

This made 2025 the best year yet for the sale of electric vehicles in Ireland, surpassing the previous record set in 2023.

Electric Vehicles Market Share

Electric, Hybrid, and Plug-in Hybrid vehicles now account for more than half of the total market share of new car sales.

Electric cars accounted for 18.89% of new car registrations last year, hybrids another 22.48%, and plug-in hybrids 14.82%.

Petrol still remains the most common engine type with 25.11% market share, and diesel claims another 17.09%.

Top Selling Electric Cars

The most popular electric cars sold in Ireland last year were the Volkswagen ID.4, the Tesla Model 3, Kia EV3, Tesla Model Y, and the Hyundai Inster.

The best selling electric car brands were Volkswagen, Kia, Tesla, Hyundai, and Skoda, which was the 5th best selling EV brand despite none of its models cracking the top 5 list.

Brian Cooke, Director General of SIMI said, “Battery-electric cars reached 23,601 units, an increase of 35% on 2024, the highest level of sales annually, surpassing the previous record year of 2023, with an increase in registrations in every county.”

“This, along with the increase in plug-in hybrid registrations, meant that Ireland comfortably surpassed the 2025 Climate Action Plan targets.”

“Hybrid-electric vehicles also continued to gain momentum in 2025, while traditional fuels (petrol and diesel) have seen a decline in their market share.”

County Growth

All counties in Ireland saw at least double digit growth in EV sales last year. The greatest y-o-y growth was in Tipperary, where EV sales grew by 108%. The lowest growth numbers were in Wicklow, which saw a 20.51% growth in sales.
