Considerations and Assumptions
Please note: The data provided in our heat pump calculator are approximations, and individual circumstances will determine the size needed and final installation costs.
- Our heat pump calculator focuses on air-to-water heat pumps – the most commonly installed heat pumps in Ireland.
- Ground source and water source heat pumps have considerably higher installation costs, while air-to-air heat pumps may be cheaper.
- Insulation levels and heat pump temperature are factors which will determine the ideal size of heat pump for your home.
- Heat Loss Indicator: Homes built prior to 2005 typically have a Heat Loss Indicator (HLI) of above 2, and insulation and/or window upgrades will be required for these homes prior to heat pump installation to ensure peak efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Homes built between 2005 and 2011, the HLI may be around 2, and for homes constructed after 2011, they should have a HLI of below 2.
- Inadequate insulation could affect your SEAI grant application as grants are only offered to homeowners whose house or apartment has a HLI of 2 or below.
- SEAI grants are offered to homeowners in Ireland for air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps and water source heat pumps.
- To be eligible for an SEAI heat pump grant, the house must have been constructed and inhabited prior to 2021.
- Homes built before 2007 require a Technical Assessment, towards which the SEAI offers €200.
- Homeowners in any type of house are eligible for the maximum grant value of €6,500 for air-to-water heat pumps, whereas apartments can receive €4,500 towards heat pump installation.
- Air-to-air heat pumps, which do not heat water, are the exception, with lower grant values from the SEAI. The maximum homeowners can apply for is €3,500.
- Homeowners with properties with a BER rating of B3 or lower can apply for the SEAI’s One-Stop Shop Service which offers a range of grants to help these homes achieve a minimum rating of B2.
