There was a 25% increase in solar panel systems installed in Ireland in 2024, with almost every county in the Republic seeing an increase on 2023 figures.
Some 29,151 solar panel systems were installed across Ireland in 2024 with grant support – an increase of 6,441 from the year before.
2024 Solar Panel Installations by County
Co. Offaly had the highest percentage increase in installations (45.8%), followed by Mayo (42.4%), Meath (40.2%) and Kerry (36.5%).
The counties with the most installations in total were Dublin with 6,391, Cork with 3,269 and Galway with 1,929.
Monaghan bucked the national trend, and was the only county to record a decrease (-1) in grants awarded for new solar arrays at the end of 2024.
The increase in installations last year came despite the maximum SEAI grant for solar panels being reduced in January 2024 by €300 to €2,100.
At the beginning of January 2025, the grant was reduced again by €300 to a maximum of €1,800.
Cavan
Co. Cavan has one of the lowest solar adoption rates per capita in Ireland, but there were promising signs in 2024 with a 21.7% increase in solar panel systems being installed., slightly below the national average of 24%. There was a 24% increase in solar installations in Donegal in 2024, with 156 more installations than 2023. A total of 731 households in the Hills availed of solar grants to have solar panels fitted on their homes in 2024, compared to 575 the previous year. If the rate of increase continues, 2025 could see over 900 homes in the county install a solar PV system.
Dublin
Dublin has a low solar adoption rate per capita, however installations are still being carried out in the county, with a 20% rise in solar in 2024. While this is below the national average, it is the largest increase in terms of actual installations (1,165). This represented 18% of national increase last year.
