The government has announced €8 million worth of green grants for Education and Training Boards to make them more energy efficient.

The green capital grants will see between €435,000 and €580,000 awarded to each of the 16 ETBs in Ireland to help with their energy efficiency and decarbonisation targets in Further Education and Training (FET) buildings.

This grant will enable ETBs to develop small scale but high impact measures, such as energy audits and controls, energy upgrades and decarbonisation measures.

Initiatives that will be considered are low-energy lighting, insulation upgrades, and the replacement of fossil fuel heating systems with renewable heating technology.

The annual funding, totalling €€8,047,500, was announced this week by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless.

“I am very pleased to announce the continuation of this funding stream to the ETBs in order to support energy efficiency measures in FET colleges across the country.”

“The green devolved capital grant allows ETBs to address small-scale measures specifically aimed at achieving targets for 2030, as set out in the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate.”

“My department, through SOLAS, is working collaboratively to support the ETBs to meet their climate obligations in respect of the decarbonisation of the FET estate.”

SOLAS will distribute the Green Devolved Capital Allocation based on their size as set out below:

ETB Maximum Capital Value for each ETB Total Funding 2025
Cavan Monaghan ETB, Donegal ETB, Kilkenny & Carlow ETB, Laois & Offaly ETB, Longford & Westmeath ETB, Tipperary ETB €435,000 €2,610,000
Galway & Roscommon ETB, Kerry ETB, Kildare & Wicklow ETB, Louth & Meath ETB, Mayo, Sligo and Leitrim ETB €507,500 €2,537,500
City of Dublin ETB, Cork ETB, Dublin & Dun Laoghaire ETB, Limerick & Clare ETB, Waterford and Wexford ETB €580,000 €2,900,000
Total 2025 Green Devolved Capital Allocation €8,047,500

Dr. Avril Behan, Director of FET College of the Future in SOLAS, said that this funding will, “provide essential support to ETBs helping them to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure that they are leading by example within their communities.”

“SOLAS is committed to sustainability, to ensuring that our economy is resilient, and to upskilling our learners in facilities that demonstrate the achievement of green standards across the country.”

“This funding will ensure that the FET sector plays its part in contributing to a greener, more sustainable environment.”
